Kimmett admits that it isn’t easy per-
forming in front of a home- town crowd. “I actually get more
stressed (than doing a
show elsewhere) because
everybody knows you,”
Kimmett says with a
laugh.
Nevertheless, the
comic with local roots is
once again bringing her
funny act to the Napanee
stage at the Lion’s Hall on
Feb. 4.
One year ago, Kimmett
was performing at the
same venue to raise money
for her educational video,
‘Talking to Sick People’.
The video is a light-hearted
examination of a serious
subject,and will be used to
help caregivers develop
better communication
techniques when speaking
with people who are sick.
She said she got the
idea to develop the video
after taking a palliative
care course through
Lennox and Addington
Hospice. She worked with
Hospice Executive Direc-
tor Peggy Sunstrum as
well as L&A County Gen-
eral Hospital’s Brenda
Luffman and staff from
Kingston General Hospital
in developing the video.
She also said that last
year’s fundraiser was key
in helping her finish the
video.
“I couldn’t have done it
at all without the emotion-
al and financial support of
people in this community,”
she said.
Kimmett’s efforts have
not gone unnoticed, or
unappreciated. “Our
research team is fortunate
to have the ‘Talking to
Sick People’ video as a
resource to enhance com-
munication and patient
safety,” said Anne O’Rior-
dan, a clinical educator at
Queen’s University.
Kimmett said that, so
far, she has received good
feedback from the instruc-
tional video. She will be
showing the eight-minute
video at the Napanee per-
formance.
Part of the proceeds
from the Napanee show
will go to benefit Hospice
L&A.
Kimmett says next
week’s show will have new
material and new charac-
ters. She’ll also have local
singer Kim Pollard shar-
ing the stage with her as
well, adding that there
will be some interaction
between herself and Pol-
lard during the perform-
ance.
“Kim will have you
singing, I’ll get you laugh-
ing.Who can ask for a bet-
ter way to beat the mid-
winter blues?,”she said.
Kimmett has been a
regular on CBC Radio on
the show ‘The Debaters’,
and has performed at the
Winnipeg Comedy Festi-
val. Kimmett also teaches
communications and writ-
ing workshops around
North America, and is
sought-after motivational
speaker.
Tickets for ‘The Rele-
vant Deborah Kimmett’
are $25 each and can be
picked up at Gray’s IDA in
Napanee, or purchased
online at www.kimmett.ca
under ‘Buy Stuff’.
