The Roles We Play

December 3, 2009

To paraphrase Shakespeare “Work is but a stage and we are merely players.”

In my case this is not just a metaphor. I am in the theatre business so this story
involves an actress called Elizabeth Ashby.  Many years ago she won the lead role in the Broadway play, Tennessee Williams, Cat on A Hot Tin Roof. She played the love-starved Maggie who moved through life like a hungry cat. To prepare herself for the role Ashby went to the streets of New York City to study alley cats behaviours. She imitated the way they moved; they way they pounced when confronted

Energy Vaccuums

September 30, 2009

Do you have energy vacuums in your life? You know those people that suck all the lifeblood out of you. The type of people that defeat you with inertia and unhelpful questions when you put your good ideas out there? When I was a young girl, my mother would make me vacuum the basement. I would do it in ten minutes and she would say no, no, it takes twenty so I would finish the vacuuming in ten minutes and leave the vacuum turned on, sucking

Camping - Right Up There With A Root Canal

June 26, 2009

It’s that time of year when people start enjoying their long-awaited summer holidays.

Some will take a leisurely boat cruise of the magnificent 1000 Islands. Among these seafarers, some will find it necessary to videotape the entire four-hour experience. Maybe they aren’t able to take in the beauty of it all, or maybe they’re counting to make sure there really are a thousand islands. I actually heard one man say to his wife as he videotaped, “We really should come here some day.”

Some tourists are nostalgic for days of yore, and plan a visit to Fort Henry. I’ve been to the Fort

March 21, 2009

I am a humorist. I was a comic but I found that calling myself a humorist pays better. Of course if I were a humorist consultant I would be rich.

For years I worked at the Second City Theatre and my training was in the art of improvisation. We had no set, no script, and so things changed nightly. We had to be very flexible and use the cardinal rule: say “yes, and” to new ideas, rather than “yes, but.”

But as I moved into speaking in the corporate and public sector, pedaling this idea of “yes, and” became my job. I told

A Diamond in the Buff

January 26, 2009

For years I’ve gone from pillar to post trying to improve myself. I was in a starter home. A fixer upper. I was under construction so much I needed a building permit. Always in search of the next book, the next DVD, class or teacher because I thought it took a village to raise a neurotic.

I did everything. I envisioned prosperity, got my colours done. I found out what colour my parachute was. I pushed the envelope; I thought “outside the box”, explored the power of positive thinking until I was suicidal. I saw Anthony Robbins so many times he got
