How To Make Your Writing Funnier In three easy lessons ( see April classes below)
Recently, I attended a community singing workshop at the Friends of Quakers on Lowther Avenue. It was early Saturday morning I sat on a chair in the circle and said hello to a beautiful lady. I came here for restoration, yet I saw myself go into gear, wanting to please them. But I stopped. This was the kind of week I needed silence. A Quaker Friendship Room is the perfect place to embrace that. The belief is not to speak until the spirit moves you. For me, the spirit could move me a lot less. I don’t have to know how to sing to join this group, as the group leader teaches us the tune by repetition. As we learned the three parts to one song, There is Work to Be Done, I noticed people of every age from two to mid-90s.
Throughout the morning, I kept noticing a woman across from me, who was much younger than me, who kept an afghan around her legs. I wondered if she was unwell. There were 45 or so people in this beautifully lit room. Within minutes we had put together the song into three parts and were encouraged to walk around the circle as we sang to blend our voices, and see if we could hold onto our harmonies as we heard others. I walked past the woman, with the afghan, as we sang “I will be on your side.” Immediately both of us began to cry, and we didn’t make eye contact exactly. I didn’t need to know the reason for this bubbling up, I was witnessing her grief. And she, mine. No story, no words, just sound. Then, I continued to walk, wiping tears on my sleeve.
A few minutes later I was losing the tune and as I did, my eyes met another woman who was also losing her way musically. We both broke into laughter. And kept singing. And that is it in a nutshell isn’t it?
On any given day, the weather changes. The rain pours down, and then the sun comes out again, and so it’s important to take time to find shelter in each other.
